Integrative bodywork

Hilary’s robust training combines one or more of the below mentioned modalities to address the specific needs of the patient. If something piques your interest

Prenatal Massage

This specialized form of massage therapy aims to alleviate common discomforts associated with pregnancy, such as back pain, muscle tension, swelling, and fatigue, while promoting relaxation and overall well-being for both mother & baby.  Patients will be positioned on their sides supported by pillows and bolsters.

Circulatory Massage (Swedish or Esalen Style)

This type of massage is the most common/familiar western style.  The practitioner employs long flowing strokes with the use of oil or lotion on the skin.  This is combined with kneading and friction of the large muscles integrated with active and passive joint movement.  It promotes general relaxation and improves circulation and mobility.  Swedish style tends to be more vigorous, including tapotement to invigorate the system; while Esalen style tends to be slower and more oriented towards a full-body integrative relaxation experience.

Sensory Repatterning (also known as:  Passive Joint Movement/Trepidation)

Gentle rocking and shaking are the basic tools of this work.  Subtle passive manipulation of the limbs to facilitate joint movements affects deep levels of the intrinsic and extrinsic muscles.  This work is especially appropriate for patients with limited range of motion as the experience gently coaxes limbs to open up for freer mobility.  The rocking is analogous to being in the ocean & is very relaxing.

Deep Tissue Muscle Sculpting

This modality uses deep compression or a compress and follow-through technique on specific muscles in the direction of the muscle fibers.  Pressure is increased slowly, which allows the muscle tissue to open and release/relax.  It is designed to release acute pain and/or chronic tension.

Sports Massage/Sports Injury Care

Therapeutic massage techniques geared to the athlete.  Techniques focus on the muscles relevant to a particular athletic activity, may be applied for pre or post athletic events, injury prevention, stretching techniques & athletic training.  Techniques include a combination of circulatory massage and deep tissue massage which may include use of deep transverse friction techniques & trigger point therapy to address sports injuries.

Asian Style Bodywork-Acupressure

From the Traditional Chinese Medical model, practitioners make use of the main meridians and the major individual points of Acupressure.  Traditional energetic and therapeutic applications of these points can be applied in a variety of ways.  Tui Na, Seitai Shiatsu, and Thai massage all have elements of Acupressure.  Acupressure aims to restore balance in the body’s energy flow.

Tui Na

Tui Na is a traditional Chinese healing system integrating Acupressure and massage.  Tui Na massage is a combination of hand techniques used to manipulate soft tissue, acupoints and channels, and the skeletal structure of the body.  In China it is used as a form of physical therapy in Traditional Hospitals.  Oscillating hand techniques, such as rolling, of the Shanghai style of Tui Na, are integrated with finger pressure for treatments addressing disorders.

Seitai Shiatsu

From the Japanese tradition, this modality employs the use of finger pressure on the acupuncture meridians and points combined with various vigorous massage strokes to enhance blood and lymph fluid circulation.  Emphasis and intention is on cleansing through the lymph system.

Traditional Thailand Massage

Thai Massage combines point pressure techniques with a wide variety of stretching movements applied very slowly in patterns of gentle rocking and rhythmic compressions.  In essence, a combination of Yoga and Acupressure.

Cupping

By creating suction and negative pressure, cupping helps drain excess fluids and toxins, loosen adhesions and lift connective tissue, and brings blood flow to stagnant muscles and skin.

Gua Sha

Involves scraping the skin with a massage tool to help improve circulation, reducing inflammation.

Salt Stone

Heated, high mineral content salt stones ease muscle tension & enhance blood circulation.

  • Medical massage is a targeted, outcome-focused form of bodywork that addresses specific medical conditions, injuries, or pain patterns as part of a broader treatment plan. It uses clinical assessment and evidence-informed techniques to reduce pain, improve function, and support recovery rather than promote general relaxation.

  • Because medical massage focuses on specific areas of tension or dysfunction to relieve pain, restore mobility, and improve muscle performance more efficiently than general massage. It can speed recovery, enhance circulation, and support long-term musculoskeletal health.
